Bears, bones and moving to the beat

Brown bear, brown bear what do you see? I see butterflies and Chinese dragons, picnics and paintings; and most of all smiling children looking at me! We continued this week having fun with our Chinese Dragon as part of our Lunar New Year exploration. Using tunnels and scarves; and lots and lots of teamwork, we had a lot of fun moving to the music of the drums, using all of the space in our large hall to move our tunnels up and down to the beat. Our dragon occasionally lost its head and sometimes even split into two dragons, but we didn't mind. Lots of laughing and enthusiasm as we worked together. The scarves were a source of great enjoyment and we continued to use them during the week in other music and movement sessions, throwing and catching, waving and pulling as we practiced our opposites and body part knowledge. That came in useful later in the week when Steph introduced us to the skeleton song and we had to find all our bones, which we soon realised was not quite as easy as we thought. We are looking forward to enjoying the skeleton song next week, particularly as the hospital will be returning to our role play corner!

Bears were also a big focus this week, whether counting or colouring and even during yoga. Bear walking and bear pose, our bears even moved into the doll house. Bears were in the bath, bears sat on chairs even tucked up in bed. Our story of the week, Brown Bear, Brown Bear what do you see? proved very popular with the children and we all very quickly joined in with the story, whether creating puppets or reciting the story during group time. It inspired colour mixing and rainbows as we talked about the different colours of the animals and birds in the story.

Continuing our journey looking at colour we all enjoyed exploring Australia Day through art. Creating our own pointillism, sharing pictures we had found online and our own creations, carefully made with cotton buds and paint, stretching finger muscles and helping eye hand co-ordination. Burns night was celebrated with lots of parties in home corner, the children enjoying making each other meals using a wide range of ingredients after discussing the traditional food eaten in Scotland, yum!

Next week we are taking a closer look at birds, enjoying the fun of bird watch and enjoying lots of fun activities; and of course, the opportunity to be a penguin in music and movement.
