Exploring our senses

This week has been filled with a riot of autumnal colour as we've printed, brushed and squished with windfall fruit to create large collages, created spiky hedgehogs with leaves and scissors; and a beautiful feathered owl. Thank you Katie for the donation of feathers, we had a wonderful time examining them before watching them float and then attaching them to our owl. Touch and sight were just two of the senses we've been exploring this week. We've also been listening to sounds, tracking them with our ears and matching with our feet for touch. An experiment with temperature provided awe and wonder for the children as we not only identified hot, cold and warm, but tried out the impact of sensory adaption. We were all astonished at the impact it had on how it made the water feel. We are all eagerly looking forward to next week's taste experiments.

As part of our continued exploration of 'About me', lots of faces have been created this week as we've been exploring the parts of our face and where they are located. Mirrors used and songs sung as we have found our eyes, ears, mouth and nose. Cutting and sticking skills have been practiced making paper portraits as well as nature faces using leaves and sticks foraged from the garden.

A fun game of 'roll a ball' with Amanda created lots of excitement as our children practiced turn taking, listening and following direction whilst rolling multiple flashing balls to and fro between one another. An activity which uses many of our senses to keep the balls in motion and the lights flashing. Our children showed great listening and control as they successfully passed the balls between one another and back to Amanda. We’ve also welcomed back Bea from Wholesome Hedgehog Yoga, Neil from Cool Sportz and Kate from La Jolie-Ronde, providing all of our children yoga, sports and French. It’s been wonderful to see the smiles and hear the laughter; and look forward to continuing our weekly sessions over the coming year.

The weather this week has continued to provide lovely periods of sunshine and warmth, enabling us to spend extended time outside engaged in lots of play. We've been discovering angles and gravity through child led play as planks became road ways and the hedge provided a supporting hill, enabling toy cars to hurtle downwards to the joy of the participating children. Leaves have been gathered in wheelbarrows, buildings have been constructed and friendships forged as we've settled into our second week of the Autumn term.
