Fireworks and poppies, planes and doctors. This week we have enjoyed exploring the medical staff that help us, both now and many years ago. As part of our study into Remembrance Sunday, the children have been playing in a field hospital, creating their own small version hospital in our dolls house and building their own spitfire from junk modelling.
Airplanes and helicopters are a constant source of fascination for many of the children, with regular flights overhead and the occasional chinook or air ambulance passing by, the children have delighted in creating their own set of wings over the week. Everyone has joined in, whether building and drawing, painting or taking test flights. It has been in constant development. The children taking turns in piloting the plane with their friends, flying all over the world, remembering holidays and places they have visited. Flapping the wings like a bird -'It's flying!" even recreating the 'n' sound during phonics 'hear the airplane..nnnn'. Patients in the hospitals have been treated, x-rays examined, and bandages tied.
Following Guy Fawkes night, the children have enjoyed sharing their delight in fireworks, recreating their favourites through art, music and movement with scarves; and enjoying listening to Handel's Royal Fireworks Overture whilst watching a display over the Thames in London. "I like this music!" "My favourite is the pink one" "It's a circle!". Even in yoga, Bea from Wholesome Hedgehog Yoga helped us create star shapes and firework movement with our bodies. Everyone enjoyed twinkling and whooshing, springing and exploding, before lying down and enjoying quiet time.
It's been a week of building too, not just planes, but wonderful recreations of famous landmarks out of wooden unit blocks. The children challenging themselves as through trial and error the Golden Gate bridge was constructed, blocks balancing and supporting. The children encouraging each other to succeed and laughing as the Eiffel tower falls down yet again. Construction vehicles are supporting the builds, transporting blocks round the site between the children. The children stacking the blocks ever higher and higher until the inevitable tumble and work starts again.
It's been a magical week seeing the creativity and understanding recreated in the masterpieces constructed; and the care and empathy shown as they have looked after their wounded patients. We can't wait to see what next week brings.
